Antique Brass Repousse Wall Plaque

This is the first post for the new Fab Fings blog and what could be more fitting than this spectacular antique brass repousse wall plaque? It is awaiting expert appraisal and is therefore not yet available in the online shop. However, it's now here on the blog for all to enjoy and the photos will stay online forever. I think this piece of history deserves the attention.

It's a huge plaque measuring 65cm in diameter!

The scene depicts a typical English tavern meeting of a musician playing a lute, a woman looking bashful whilst serving drinks from a jug and men looking on or smoking pipes.

If only social lives were as simple today.

The figure above is a man playing the lute. His clothing and hairstyle are 16th century and the hat worn by the man behind him is also 16th century.

The woman is obviously a bit embarrassed by the drunken male attention but it all seems so innocent by today's standards.

To the left, you can see a man smoking what is probably a clay pipe and also wearing a sword.

The man in the background is also smoking a pipe.

Bottles of wine, a stool and a bowl of fruit tell us what you could expect to find in a 16th century English pub: a very simple offering.

The brass has lots of beautiful verdigris and a lovely patina.

You certainly wouldn't want to polish it!

The back of the scene depicts the brick wall of the pub.

The tiled floor is a nice tough. Was it stone or terracotta?
